Mon 12th Jan 2004   :   Luck avoided the worst tragedy in Malta
Today we heard the curious news which could have ended up in one of the worst tragedies in Malta. Again it is another example of typical Maltese unprofessional carelessness. An airbus aeroplane of the sole Maltese airliner, AirMalta, had collided with an electric pylon while taxing (moving towards) to the runway to take off to Catania. The news said that for a reason or other the pilot have turned the plane abruptly to his left (and hence go off track) becasue there was 'an obstacle' in his way. Some suggested that the obstacle was a helicopter which not have been there. Others claimed that the pilot should not have taken that track to go to the main runway, but he did so to take a short cut. Whatever, what is sure is that then the plane's wing hit an electric pylon which bent over the plane fuselage. Luckily the plane fuel (stored in the wings) did not catch fire. I also heard that few feet below ground there were the aviation fuel pipes from a fuel station few kms away, which could easily have blasted up all way in the event that the plane would have exploded. Here are 3 photos of the event:     pic 1     pic 2     pic 3
