This web-section consists of a collection of the very popular traditional Maltese songs, mostly being released in the 60 and early 80s. Some are love songs and other are dedicated to our country of Malta by patriotic authors. The most popular titles are "Xemx", "Inti djamant", "L-ahhar bidwi f'Wied il-Ghasel", "Lil Ommi", "Mur hallini u itlaq l'hemm", "il-Festa", "Niftakar fik", and "L-ewwel tfajla li habbejt".
There are also some songs which are locally called as 'Ghana' and are a major part of the Maltese folklore songs. Ghana was sung in the past by maltese peasants and poor people for many years as a way of entertainment. Two of the most famous "ghannejja" (ghana singers) were Fredu Abela (also known as il-Bamboccu) who sadly passed away in 2004 and Frans Baldacchino, known as 'il-Budaj' who also passed away.
A famous rock singer who is much loved by the Maltese both for his friendly character and his great music, mostly released in the late 70s is Freddie Portelli. His songs are either love songs or dedicated to Malta, such as his famous hit - Viva Malta. There are hundreds of good songs which can be placed in the list, but the ones selected here are undoubtfully the best classic maltese songs ever ; all of them have a large nostalgic, patriotic or romantic character.
Included are also the lyrics from some songs - a great idea for Karaoke lovers! If the lyrics column of the corresponding song is marked 'YES' you can click upon this 'Yes' link to have the lyrics displayed on an own and different window.
