PHOTO GALLERY:
Feast of Saint George at Qormi, Malta
June 2004

Page Description

This photogallery consists of many photos from from the traditional local feast of the city of Hal-Qormi (central region of Malta) dedicated to Saint George. When the feast arrives in a particular town or village, there will be many activities going on and preparations done, some of which would have taken nearly a year of dedicated, sometimes voluntary work.

The streets are closed for vehicles and the people gather there following the band playing joyful music. The streets are decorated with many things such as colourful large statues, tapestry, light, etc. In some important streets there will also be caravans with take away food, drinks and ice-cream to buy. The most beautiful and rich decoration is un-doubtfully the church. As it can be seen here it is decorated by lights from the outside, and much more royal-like stuff inside as it can be seen in the photos below. Finally there will be those spectacular firework displays (climax at the eve of the feast - usually a Saturday night) which consists of sky fireworks and ground fireworks, the later more known as cikcifogu (chick-chi-fwo-guw) derived and corrupted from the Italian Gioco di fuoco that is Fire Play. There is a description about every photo and the photogallery in nicely presented with navigation buttons and photo thumbnails.

This particular page contains some more examples of ground fireworks. The final ones are large and really spectacular. [MarZ]

In this particular case some burning pieces from the firework stand in front hit the one behind a caused it to light automatically, so that there are two stands burning simultaneously

This was my absolute favourite. There are 5 similar firework stands which are lit simultaneously and form a shape like several wedding cakes !!!

This is the last of the ground fireworks and also the largest. There are 6 similar stands with powerful 'jets' covering a very large area. For this reason it is also known as the 'carpet'.
