PHOTO GALLERY:
The City of Uppsala, Sweden
Summer 2004

Page Description

This photogallery consists of many photos from the city of Uppsala, the 4th largest in Sweden. It is situated about 40km from the Airport of Stockholm - Arlanda. I went to Uppsala in Summer 2004 (June and August) and it was another beautiful, clean, quite Swedish city. The most interesting sites are the large Botanical garden and the Cathedral. Since I have been there for only 1 day, I am sure that there is more and more to see in Uppsala. There is a description about every photo and the photogallery in nicely presented with navigation buttons and photo thumbnails.

Some more photos from the Botanical Garden beside the castle. Some photo description text is marked with an asterisk ' * '. This means that additional information was sent to me by mail by Andreas Heimbrandt, Research Assistant Dep. of Economics, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Thanks Andreas!!! [MarZ]

Photo of one of the several small bridges decorated with several flower pots at the sides. The small bridge is called Västgötaspången. Västgöta since it's next to Västgöta Nation (picture nr. 10). Spången means the plank. The name hence implies that it only was a plank in the beginning. *

Photo of the river with this special photo technique to make the river look transperent with several long water weeds swaying inside with the waterstream. The small bridge is again Västgötaspången. *

Photo of the streaming river with a nice large park at the right and 2 or 3 open air restaurants including a greek restaurant called Santorini where I and Malin dined. It is called Islandsfallet, which means the Iceland falls. You can the old tubine house to the right and the house to the far left with the clock on it was the old customs house. The large park is Stadsparken, which is the city park. *

Nice photo from one of the squares in Uppsala with the huge cathedral at the background, visible from almost every corner at Uppsala. It was a pity the the weather was cloudy instead of a nice blue sky. Gamla torget is the name, and means the Old Square. *

This is the castle of Uppsala situated on a little uphill and looks quite different from the classic type of castle. Further down is the huge botanical garden. Compare the right wing of the castle with what it looks like on the left. You can note the profile of a wing but no wing. They planned to build it with two wings but the queen Kristina (ruler at the time) wasn't there so often so there simply was not need for a bigger castle. *

Finally a nice photo taken from a Greek restaurant called Santorini beside the river at the center of Uppsala. The food was very good here but larger portions would be more appreciated. There was some dishes which where really from Greek cousine such as my plate with Tsitsiki sauce (never tasted before)
