Views from the high tower of St Peter's church: An old looking skyscraper behind the market place is the Academy of Science building. Built in 1955 by the Soviets, the building is 108m tall and holds 21 floors.

Facts about this building:
1) This was Latvia's first skyscraper, and remained the country's tallest building until construction of Hansabanka Central Office.
2) The building was a gift for the industrial workers and farmers of the Soviet Union.
3) The building is similar in style to Warsaw's Palace of Culture and Science, which was also a gift from the Soviet Union.
4) This was the first skyscraper in the Soviet Union to use new technology in ferroconcrete construction.
