Budapest - Jun 2006

Page Description

Photogallery about our 5 days holiday in Budapest - the capital city of Hungary (30May-5Jun 2006). Budapest is a very large capital city with large and highly decorated building lining most of the streets of the central area. There are numerous impressive sites, churches, park squares, many museums and statues to keep the tourist and his camera busy. It is rather impossible to visit them all in a week. The transport system is very efficient for the 2 million inhabitants of Budapest - there is a fast underground metro, and efficient trams and buses at very cheap fares.

The most impressive sites are the Fisherman's Bastion including Mathias Church and small old village it withholds, Chains Bridge over the Danube river, the Castle, the majestic Parliament, the Jewish Synagogue, Saint Stephen (Istvan) Basilica, and a peaceful walk around Margit island. As far as I noticed, only Vaci Utca (Vaci Street) is for pedestrians only and it is also the most busy and popular street in Budapest with many shops, 2 nice parks, Cafeteria, some restaurants and of course lined by characteristic distinct decorated buildings side by side that literally, each deserves a photo for its own!

Restaurants are not concentrated in one area, and so, you have to walk a lot to have visited say 5 to choose from. The central ones are rather expensive compared to the living standards of Hungary but on the whole they have 'okay' prices for the pockets of many tourists. However there are several excellent restaurants with relatively cheap prices scattered around Budapest.

Visitor hits from 21-Jun-06:

This is the church of St. Anne (Szent Anna Templom), which is located on the south side of Batthyhány tér. The fine Baroque building (Kristóf Hamon, Máté Nepauer 1740-1762) is a wholly captivating place of worship.

Over the years the church has withstood the ravages of earthquakes, floods, two World Wars and the construction of the nearby metro line and station. It's elegant well-proportioned exterior is matched inside by the high altar statues of the Virgin Mary and St Anne. Statues of angels and cherubs embellish the supporting altars, with a wonderful oval domed ceiling fresco by Pál Molnar completing the effect.

The Calvinist Church, situated in Kálvin tér, was built in neo-Gothic style in the nineteenth century. The four-columned great porch, the organ loft and the pulpit are all the work of the great Hungarian architect József Hild. Master stained glass craftsman Miksa Róth designed the acclaimed windows. The treasury contains a fine collection of liturgical objects dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

This is the Basilica of St. Stephen, which is Budapest's largest church, holding more than 8000 worshippers.

Designed by Jozsef Hild in 1845, work only began in earnest in 1851. However, Hild died before the project was complete, leaving the task of overseeing its construction to architect Miklós Ybl. During an inspection, Ybl was amazed to find that huge cracks had appeared in many of the building's outer walls. Less than a week after cordoning off the site, the church's vast dome tilted and collapsed. The remainder was also declared structurally unsound and demolished to make way for Ybl's neo-Renaissance design. The building, which was finally opened by Emperor Francis Joseph in 1906, also suffered terribly from allied bombing raids during World War II.

The inside of the Basilica has been criticized as being too dark - there are simply not enough windows for such a large building. Consequently, it's hard to fully appreciate the interior decoration of the church, which includes Gyula Benczúr's depiction of St. Stephen offering the Hungarian crown to the Virgin Mary.

Although other Soviet statues and memorials in Budapest have been removed or carted off to Statue Park, this monument remains as a genuine reminder of the sacrifices made by Red army troops who died liberating Budapest in 1944/45.

An important metro station on the Buda side is Moscow Square (Moszkva ter). The characteristic building in the background is the Postal Palace built in 1925.

Another famous characteristic of this square is a clock (not visible in the photo). Many Hungarians use the clock as a meeting point, they often use the phrase"lets meet under the clock". However, due to restaurations of the square there have been plans to remove the clock. Many Hungarians have protested against this, since they thing the clock is a very important part of the square.
