Plenty of mosquitoes were fed during this shot. The water was so still that it acts like a perfect mirror. In many cases, the beaches of Saaremaa consists of very shallow waters with patches of land emerging slighly from the water. TALLINN+SAAREMAA-14 : Summer Holiday in Estonia Tallinn and the Islands of Saaremaa and Muhu (August 2007) Saaremaa have also experienced some sour taste of the World War II. The Germans tried to conquest the Estonian island which was defended and protected by the Soviet Army. This is one of the several soviet bunkers (underground military defence complex) found in Saaremaa. This one is called Stebel's Fortification and is found at Saare peninsula. Most of the complex is found underground, except a high stone watch tower which looks like a windmill, maybe built that way as a disguise from the enemy. TALLINN+SAAREMAA-15 : Summer Holiday in Estonia Tallinn and the Islands of Saaremaa and Muhu (August 2007) Another wonderful site at the Saare peninsula is Sorve Lighthouse. There is also some soviet bunkers eroded by and partially immersed in water. However the nicest part is a long and narrow path of about 1-2km just few cms above see level on which can walk to the tip and turn back. TALLINN+SAAREMAA-16 : Summer Holiday in Estonia Tallinn and the Islands of Saaremaa and Muhu (August 2007) In these plain grounds at Tehumardi took place one of the worst battles hosted on Saaremaa between the Soviets and Nazi in October 1944. A large number of soldiers were killed in this battle since both armies met each other in surprise and the battle was practically hand to hand. Now there is a monument (seen far away) and numerous rememberance stones each with the name of each soldier that was killed in the battle. We did not manage to find Tehumardi Soviet Military base indicated nearby on the map. TALLINN+SAAREMAA-17 : Summer Holiday in Estonia Tallinn and the Islands of Saaremaa and Muhu (August 2007) Church of the village of Kihelkonna and an abandoned stone campanile, about 200m away. The campanile used to hold a big bell, instead of being part of the church itself. This is the only campanile found in the Baltics, and the church has the highest tower (steeple) of all churches in Saaremaa   TALLINN+SAAREMAA-18 : Summer Holiday in Estonia Tallinn and the Islands of Saaremaa and Muhu (August 2007) Photo from inside Kihelkonna church. TALLINN+SAAREMAA-19 : Summer Holiday in Estonia Tallinn and the Islands of Saaremaa and Muhu (August 2007) Loona Manor, present at the centre of Vilsandi national Park. Several Manors are indicated in the touristic map of Saaremaa but we have not figured out was there is so special about them, apart being a large house. We visited 3 manors and they where closed and empty.
