TALLINN+SAAREMAA-20 : Summer Holiday in Estonia Tallinn and the Islands of Saaremaa and Muhu (August 2007) |

This is one of our favourite spots in Saaremaa, which we found on our own, hence not indicated on the map. Stephen just wanted to go on what looked to be an interesting area on the map. After a bit of hassle to find the way, we were rewarded by a beautiful beach by the forest characterised by shallow and clear water and also a very peaceful place to stay. In fact one could risk to swim naked !! :-)
Also one should mention that the see bed consisted of fine mud which was ideal for mud therapy (spa). After experiencing this natural mud therapy, we felt energised, and a very smooth skin. |

Stephen walked about 500m (or even more) and the water was still knee shallow. In some areas the water was about 1m high, but not more. Stephen have seen footprints of horses, dogs, shoes, large birds, ducks and other identified animal embedded in the mud.

We have driven to a number of villages or towns in Saaremaa, and the church was always the most important attraction to stop and visit. This church is situated in Lumanda and thanks to stopping for a photo, we discovered a very good and cheap restaurant close to it.

A fine restaurant at Lumanda which specializes in true Estonian food. This is not one of those 'fake' restaurants stating that they offers Estonian food, and then you see pizza, burgers and pasta in the menu. No, this was truly a genuine Estonian restaurant, which served food we never experienced before. Simple but very good. The restaurant had also a certificate stating that tis restaurant offers food coming from organic farming.

Another fine restaurant at Kuressaare was situated in this large Windmill, built in 1899. The portions were a bit small, but it was a splendid experience dining at the contours of a windmill.

We have moved to 4 different accomodations during our 7-day holiday on Saaremaa, and we were pleased by all of them. The cheapest was a camping site some 2km away from Kuressaare, and it was well organised, clean, large, and very cosy, though a bit restricted in space. We slept 2 nights, because it was also close to Kuressaare.

The church of Mustjala is famous for musical festivals, and it was a rather large church.

During our drive to further north from Mustjala (to Targanna Harbour), one shall come across the Ninase Windmills. The large windmills were rebuilt and painted as a man and woman with Estonian National clothes.
