The taxonomy of this species is very controversial but latest trends seems to include it in Daucus carota as the subspecies drepanensis. Some authors persist that it deserves its own species rank, considering the differences to be very distinct. Indeed it is a much more robust plant with larger, glossy leaves and umbels that remain hemi-spherical in fruiting (funnel-shaped in D. carota s. str.). Another closely related and controversial species is Daucus rupestris, also recorded from Malta, but further research should be carried out to determine the exact taxonomy of this complex. Preliminary studies suggested intermediates too, making the situation even more complex. |

Botanical Description |
Similar to Daucus carota s. l. but much more robust and larger plant reaching up to 1.8m high. Leaves larger with wider leaflets and distinctly glossy and polished above. Umbels much larger and hemispherical, remaining in this shape when in fruit unlike D. carota subsp. carota which is flat in flower and becomes funnel-shaped in fruit. The habitat also differ by being more coastal and never found more than 400-500m from the coast. The spinules on the seeds are longer than D. carota | |
