Considerd as a wild type of pear in Malta but probably it is not native but an archeophyte. It was used as rootstock to grow commercial pears, because it has the advantage to resist draught and arid situations and can grow in different types of soil. The populations in Malta and Gozo live in the wild without the intervention of man. The fruit is small and not palatable.
