PHOTO GALLERY:
A week in TAMPERE (Finland)
August 2009

Page Description

This photogallery consists of many photos during our 8 days vacation in Tampere, South of Finland. We have visited numerous places mostly nature areas like Pyynikki, Viikin Island (Viikinsaari), and Seitseminen Nature reserve, but also large shopping complex (Ideapark) the well known amusement park of Sarkanniemi, and a number of churches in central Tampere such as Alexander church, the cathedral and the old church. We spent many hours bathing in cool-water lakes (example Kaukajarvi) and roaming in the streets of Tampere centre.

Visitor hits from 01-Sep-09:

Coat of arms of Tampere showing a hammer for its industry and symbol of medicine.

Tampere (Swedish: Tammerfors) is a city in southern Finland located between two lakes, Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. Tampere is dubbed the "Manchester of Finland" for its industrial past as the former center of Finnish industry.

The Tampere region, called Pirkanmaa, which includes outlying municipalities, had around 470,000 residents, of which 230,000 were employed, and a turnover of 25 billion euros in 2007.

Tampere is the most populous inland city in any of the Nordic countries. The city has a population of 209,748, with close to 300,000 people in the conurbation and over 340,000 in the metropolitan area.[8] Tampere is the third most-populous municipality in Finland, after the Greater Helsinki municipalities of Helsinki and Espoo. Helsinki can be reached in 1.5 hours by train and 2 hours by car. The distance to Turku is approximately the same. Tampere airport is the second-busiest international airport in Finland, with 800,000 passengers annually. (Text taken from the free encyclopedia - Wikipedia)

Our residence (thanks Heikki!) was situated close to a fantastic lake called Kaukajarvi. We often went there for recreation. Miranda loves bathing a lot, Malin stays a bit in peace, and I liked to explore the water-loving plants in the area!

This is Alexander Church which was built in 1880-1881 mainly in the Neo-Gothic style, but it has also some other elements. It was severely damaged by fire during the reconstruction in 1937. It is another Lutheran Church in tampere centre.

The Altar painting inside the Lutheran church above painted by Aleksandra Saltin in 1883.

In Tampere centre, there is also at least two beautiful churches not included in this gallery. One is a well-kept Orthodox church built in 1896-1899 and situated in a park which we visited last time we have been in Tampere and can be seen in a previous gallery. However we missed the Finlayson church built in 1878-1879 and should be situated in the Finlayson area.
