PHOTO GALLERY:
The City of Uppsala, Sweden
Summer 2004

Page Description

This photogallery consists of many photos from the city of Uppsala, the 4th largest in Sweden. It is situated about 40km from the Airport of Stockholm - Arlanda. I went to Uppsala in Summer 2004 (June and August) and it was another beautiful, clean, quite Swedish city. The most interesting sites are the large Botanical garden and the Cathedral. Since I have been there for only 1 day, I am sure that there is more and more to see in Uppsala. There is a description about every photo and the photogallery in nicely presented with navigation buttons and photo thumbnails.

This particular page contains photos of the huge and cathedral rich in old art such as paintings, marble statues, church decorations, tapestries, stained glass and gothic architecture. It is Scandinavia's largest church, founded in c. 1260 and inaugurated in 1435. It is also the national sanctuary of the Church of Sweden (Lutheran), and a archdiocesan and parish church. Here one finds the Tombs of king Gustav Vasa, King Johan III and their Queens, Carl Linnaeus and the Shrine od St. Erik.

The entrance to the cathedral was free of charge and I could take photos and film. It is really a great site seeing that one should not miss in Uppsala. Some photo description text is marked with an asterisk ' * '. This means that additional information was sent to me by mail by Andreas Heimbrandt, Research Assistant Dep. of Economics, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Thanks Andreas!!! [MarZ]

This photo was taken while approaching the cathedral of Uppsala. There was this nice flower pattern which represents coat of arms of a sport club (situated very near)

A photo of myself with the towers of the cathedral in the background. This was taken from a fairly high plateau on which the castle of Uppsala is built on. There was a nice view of most of the city of uppsala, but the high trees covered some of the view.

Photo of front view of the cathedral. The architecture is full of detail and art and I think it is described as Gothic style (especially noted from the several arches above the door.). The sight of the church when standing in front of it is really impressive. To see a detailed and high resolution photo please cliick here (380kb)

This is another doorway at the left side of the church. This door is very similar to the front main door. .

Close up photo of the window. It is divided into 14 symmetrical sectors and covered by goose-wire so as to protect the marvellous and huge stained glass window. (see photos ahead to see state of art stained glass!)

Inside the church there is a treasure of priceless art. At the perimeter of the church there are like quite large chambers each having some important monument, statute, painting and other examples of fine art. This is for example coat of arms in full colour of some king or noble family. Below is an old painting of the cathedral

Marble work of the coat of arms and other decoration of some important family, maybe those of the kings buried in this cathedral. It is not easy to sculpture so much detail in the hard marble.

This is the main altar of the church which holds masses regularly. The altar is very simple as in most Lutheran church and in contrast with catholic church which has altars decorated with many valuable decorations often gold, silver, damask, and other expensive material. For example click here to see the altar of a catholic church in Malta, taken from the church dedicated to Saint George in the city of Qormi during its local feast

A strange candle holder beside the entrance main door. Here people can light a candle, put it in the candle holder and make a prayer. Malin made one for her mother.
